Not suitable for a telehealth-only service
A video-only service cannot safely provide care that depends on in-person assessment or close monitoring. Please do not refer patients with the following. They are better served by a public mental health service, a crisis team, or an in-person psychiatrist.
- Current risk of suicide or harm to othersIncluding a recent attempt, or any situation needing urgent or same-day review. Use your local crisis assessment team or emergency department.
- Psychosis, mania or severe illnessPresentations that need close observation, frequent review or in-person assessment.
- Involuntary or compulsory treatmentPatients subject to, or likely to need, treatment under mental health legislation.
- Medical instabilityIncluding severe eating disorders and substance withdrawal that needs medical supervision.
- Cognitive impairmentWhere the patient cannot take part in a video consultation, even with support.
- Needs a physical examination or in-person monitoringAs a necessary part of assessment or treatment.
- Cannot meet the practical requirementsNo private, safe space; no reliable video connection; or unable to confirm identity, location and an emergency contact.
- Stimulant requests with substance-use concernsCurrent substance use disorder, or concerns about misuse or diversion of stimulant medicine.
- Prefers in-person careYour GP can refer to an in-person psychiatrist instead.
Suitability is reviewed continuously. A referral is reviewed before booking, and suitability for telehealth is reassessed throughout care. If in-person care becomes necessary, the patient and referring GP will be told, and the transfer of care to an appropriate in-person service will be arranged.
ADHD medicines and your state. Rules for prescribing stimulant medicines differ between states and territories. Depending on where the patient lives, medicines may be prescribed directly or through shared care with the GP. Not every medicine can be prescribed by telehealth in every state, and any medicine is prescribed only if clinically appropriate after assessment. This is confirmed at referral review.
Support people and interpreters. A family member or carer is welcome to join with the patient's consent. Interpreters can be arranged where needed; please note this in the referral.

Telehealth: what to know
Limitations of telehealth
Physical examination is not possible, so anything needing one is arranged through your GP. Assessment relies on what can be seen and heard on video, which can miss subtle physical signs. Consultations depend on a stable internet connection and a private space at your end. Telehealth is not suitable for emergencies or high-risk situations.
If in-person care becomes clinically necessary, this will be discussed with you and your GP. If video fails during an appointment, the consultation may be completed or rescheduled by phone.
Privacy during consultations
The same confidentiality standards apply as for in-person care. Consultations are not recorded; any recording would only ever occur with your express consent. You are asked to join from a private, safe space, and to tell the doctor if anyone else is present. At the start of each consultation you will be asked to confirm your location and an emergency contact.
